Conciliation talks break off between CUPE and Chignecto-Central Regional School Board

TRURO, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwired - Jan. 20, 2014) - Conciliation talks between more than 400 bus drivers, custodians and tradespeople in CUPE Local 3890 and the Chignecto Central Regional School Board have broken off.

CUPE National Representative Betty Jean Sutherland says, "The union has given the board a way to settle this dispute and avoid a strike, but they basically told us they needed time to think about it.

"Frankly, I'm a little bit shocked that they would risk putting more than 400 employees on the street and cause a disruption in services for students when the union has been more than reasonable in its position," says Sutherland.

Says Sutherland, "The only outstanding issue in these contract talks is contracting out and how it affects job security for members of Local 3890. The last thing our members want to do is withdraw their services. We are hopeful that the Board can take a more reasoned approach to solving this one outstanding issue, so that we can reach a negotiated settlement and avoid a strike."
