Concussion Breakthrough?

Scientists State that Oxidative Stress is Present in Concussions and Offer a Potential Solution

LONDON, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 25, 2012) - Summit Health Sciences, Inc. announced today that Health Canada has recently approved its antioxidant product URAC Plus™ for sale in Canada and that steps are under way to start marketing and distributing the product across North America. The product was assigned a Natural Products Number [NPN] by Health Canada and was cleared for the Source of Antioxidants for the Maintenance of Good Health claim. A strong Immune System is essential for Good Health.

"URAC Plus™ is a new, patented super antioxidant that has the ability to almost immediately increase the level of uric acid, the most prevalent 'antioxidant' present in the human body" said Dieter Doederlein, President of Summit Health Sciences. "Raising the level of uric acid indirectly strengthens the Immune System. The function of the Immune system is to protect the body from excessive exposure to free radicals which, if left unchecked, build up over time and cause cellular damage, harming our DNA, mitochondria, and cell membranes. Keeping the Immune System at peak efficiency is the best way to prevent the onset of almost any disease state."

And that may well have implications for Traumatic Brain Injuries [concussions].

There is compelling evidence, based on a great number of scientific studies that show that a significant portion of the damage from a TBI/concussion is due to inflammation or oxidative stress.

The evidence also shows that this inflammation, if left unchecked, is the leading cause of damage to the injured brain. Anything that reinforces the Immune System to combat this inflammation could significantly minimize brain damage.

"Part of our development program will include working with a major Canadian University in the coming weeks, to study the post-concussion effects and swelling in the brain before and after taking URAC Plus" said Mr. Doederlein. "We cannot prevent concussions, but our scientists believe that a stronger Immune System can significantly reduce the recovery time and minimize overall damage to these injuries.

Today there is an enormous interest in sports regarding concussions and the development of future complications with the functions of the brain. There is great speculation surrounding the different treatments and the effectiveness of these treatments. "What they appear to be missing is the simple underlying fact that whatever caused the concussion triggered an oxidative stress cascade of events that results in a chronic inflammatory situation within the brain that, if left unchecked, leads to untold damage. Regardless of the type of treatment that a person undergoes, without strengthening the Immune System to combat oxidative stress, recovery will be drawn out and quite possibly allow for irreversible damage" said Doederlein.
