Connecticut Plastic Surgeon Explains How Eyelid Surgery Has Changed Throughout the Years

Dr. Fredric Newman Describes How Blepharoplasty Has Increased in Popularity Over the Years and Continues to Attract Women and Men in a Variety of Age Groups

DARIEN, CT--(Marketwired - Aug 8, 2013) - According to plastic surgeon Fredric Newman, MD, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) has seen a significant rise in popularity over the last 10 years. He associates the increase to more women and men learning of the procedure's many benefits. In fact, Dr. Newman says an array of people, widely ranging in age, sex, and socioeconomic status, are showing interest in eyelid surgery at his plastic surgery practice in the Darien and Fairfield, CT area.

Dr. Newman notes the most common reason patients give for considering eyelid surgery is looking tired and being told they need more sleep. The plastic surgeon explains how this typically results from herniated fat under the eyelids that result in a "baggy" appearance," as well as thin, sagging skin on the upper eyelids. Some of his patients even experience vision obstruction from the hooding skin. By removing fat in the lower eyelid and removing excess skin and fat from the upper eyelid, Dr. Newman says he can provide a more youthful and revitalized appearance.

In previous years, Dr. Newman's practice -- the Aesthetic Surgery Center -- had approximately 80% women and 20% men undergoing blepharoplasty. Today, that percentage has shifted to 60% women and 40% men, a drastic increase in the amount of male patients seeking a solution to their cosmetic concerns. Dr. Newman equates this increase to the growing knowledge of eyelid surgery's many successful outcomes. As more men have become interested in receiving cosmetic surgery and aesthetic enhancement procedures at his practice, Dr. Newman says the average age of typical patients has also changed.

Eyelid surgery patients typically range from as early as their 30's to as late as their 70's, explains Dr. Newman. He says younger eyelid surgery patients at his practice typically have inherited the eyelid skin qualities of their parents, which leads them to consider eyelid surgery to improve issues they may be having with their appearance, such as herniated fat in the lower eyelids. However, Dr. Newman says most of his blepharoplasty patients are typically in their 40's & 50's. In the past, Dr. Newman says these patients would be of a more affluent status, but today, he reveals that "because of financing, the internet and a general awareness, we run the whole socioeconomic spectrum for patients." Dr. Newman notes that people of all types are benefitting from eyelid surgery at his practice, and as more learn of its rejuvenating potential, the number of patients is expected to grow.

With the many advances in cosmetic surgery, Dr. Newman says he is able to provide eyelid surgery with results that can last for decades, especially in the lower eyelids. He explains how it is one of the longest-lasting rejuvenative procedures you can have performed, proving to be a great investment for many patients. Dr. Newman says it can even be performed in a combined procedure -- commonly with a facelift -- for patients who want to address other facial areas and obtain a more comprehensive aesthetic makeover. Overall, Dr. Newman says a blepharoplasty can often improve the overall appearance of the face when done properly, which is why he recommends interested patients consult a board-certified plastic surgeon.
