Reports from Bloomberg last month hinted that Sprint Nextel is in talks with the cable companies over a new round of investment that may lead to a full takeover of 4G partner Clearwire. Sprint holds a 54 percent stake in Clearwire, making Sprint both Clearwire's largest shareholder and customer.

Bloomberg reports that the discussions appear to be focused on raising sufficient new funds to enable Clearwire to continue the roll-out of its 4G wireless network and make the switch from WiMax Technology to a rival 4G technology called LTE favoured by most mobile network operators.
