Construction Set to Begin for a New Affordable Housing Project in Prince Albert

PRINCE ALBERT, SASKATCHEWAN--(Marketwired - June 17, 2016) - The Government of Canada and the Province of Saskatchewan, along with Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Prince Albert Branch, announced funding for the construction of an eight-unit rental housing project for individuals with complex needs.

The Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, on behalf of Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), along with Joe Hargrave, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Prince Albert Carlton, on behalf of the Honourable Donna Harpauer, Minister of Social Services and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), and Doug Kinar, Executive Director of CMHA Prince Albert Branch, made the announcement today.

Quick facts:

• Located at 581 and 585 7^th Street East in Prince Albert, the project consists of the new construction of eight one-bedroom rental units in two four-plexes. Each unit is approximately 560 square feet (52 square meters).
  
  
• The Federal and Provincial Governments, through CMHC and SHC, are jointly contributing up to $900,000 towards the eight units under the Canada-Saskatchewan Investment in Affordable Housing (IAH) 2014-2019 Agreement.
  
  
• An additional $390,000 in funding will be provided by CMHA in the form of mortgage financing.
  
  
• CMHA is a non-profit corporation operating in Prince Albert since 1997. Focusing on assisting those with mental health illness,it also provides a drop-in center (The Nest), vocational, recreation, education, wellness programming, as well as a community kitchen and a lunch program.
  
  
• Independent living supports for tenants will be provided by CMHA, with additional support services and programming from the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region.
  
  
• This investment supports the Saskatchewan Poverty Reduction Strategy goal of ensuring Saskatchewan people have affordable, safe, secure and stable housing.
