Construction Site Winter Warning From Swinton Commercial

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Sept. 28, 2011) - Swinton Commercial, a leading UK business insurance broker is already urging construction site managers to take extra care of their workers this winter, by encouraging employers to keep health and safety procedures up to date.

A survey carried out by The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found in the past decade over 900 workers and nearly 100 members of the public were injured due to construction site related incidents that occurred over the winter months.

Among the advice given, Swinton Commercial recommends that policies such as Public Liability Insurance and Employers Liability Insurance are up to date to cover any accidents that may occur throughout the winter months.

To avoid any incidents over the winter months that can affect an insurance policy, Swinton Commercial offers the following advice to construction site managers:

  • Always ensure conditions underfoot are checked, particularly in periods of adverse weather i.e. snow, rain and ice.
  • Provide adequate lighting for dark mornings and winter nights.
  • As a regulation, supply waterproof insulated overalls and thermal gloves to protect employees against harsh conditions that could affect their health and safety. Providing high visibility clothing is essential for dark periods during the day.
  • Remember low temperatures and wind chill can reduce dexterity and alertness, so keep track of the weather forecast for those operating heavy plant or hazardous equipment.

Jolene Shaw, Technical Referral Advisor at Swinton Commercial says, "It's essential that the construction site manager carries out proper risk assessments and communicates this to all employees and contractors – ensuring health and safety regulations are strictly adhered to. This is standard all year round but even more so in the winter months. Evidence of a well managed risk would also have a positive impact when underwriters are rating a risk."
