Construction to Start for New Affordable Rental Housing in La Loche

LA LOCHE, SASKATCHEWAN--(Marketwired - Aug. 16, 2016) - The construction of a new affordable rental housing project in the Village of La Loche officially broke ground today.

The 14-unit project will be built in La Loche's new subdivision and consists of three 2-bedroom duplexes (six units) and two 3-bedroom duplexes (four units) for families, in addition to one 1-bedroom four-plex (fours unit) for singles.

The Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, on behalf of the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), the Honourable Donna Harpauer, Minister of Social Services and Minister Responsible for the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, and His Worship Kevin Janvier, Mayor of the Village of La Loche, made the announcement today.

Quick facts:

• Methy Housing Corporation and Methy Construction and Maintenance Corporation are two non-profits owned by the municipality. Together they provide property management, project management and construction services in La Loche, including this project.
• The federal and provincial governments, through CMHC and SHC, are jointly contributing about $1.4 million towards the construction of the 14 units under the Canada-Saskatchewan Investment in Affordable Housing (IAH 2014-2019) Agreement.
• The funding balance of approximately $630,000 will be provided by private lender financing and community contributions (cash, land and in-kind).
• The 2-bedroom duplexes are 1,600 square feet per unit or 149.64 square metres with the 3-bedroom duplexes at 1,800 square feet per unit or 167.23 square metres and the 1-bedroom four-plex at 608 square feet per unit or 56.49 square metres.
• Completion is targeted for fall 2017.
