Consulting Engineers of Ontario Helps Organize 'Canstruction' Event for Food Bank

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - June 7, 2013) - Consulting Engineers of Ontario

One 'can' can make a difference. Or 52,000 cans.

This week, 18 teams of engineers, architects and designers used more than 52,000 cans of food to build life-sized structures for the 14th Annual Canstruction Competition, a charitable event.

The 'Canstructures' are on display for public viewing in the lobbies of four towers at 77 King Street West -- TD Bank, Ernst & Young, Royal Trust, and Canadian Pacific -- until June 8th, before being disassembled and donated to Daily Bread Food Bank, the city's largest food bank.

Twelve out of 18 teams -- and five out of six winners -- were from Ontario engineering firms. They made the structures out of only canned and packaged food.

Canstruction is a non-profit competition that decreases hunger and fights poverty in Toronto and cities around the world. Since 1992, Canstruction has contributed more than 17.5 million pounds of food. The competition recognizes a variety of factors, not just design aesthetics. For example, the 'Structural Ingenuity' award considers complexity of design, and the 'Best Use of Labels' award focuses on creativity with labels and graphic design.

Consulting Engineers of Ontario is a non-profit association of 200 engineering companies that employ nearly 20,000 Ontarians. CEO's mission is to promote a sustainable business environment for members. It organized Canstruction with the Society for Design Administration and the Design Exchange.
