Consumer Awareness and Attitudes About RFID Are Stabilizing

A June 2005 RFID Consumer Buzz Study by BIGresearch and Artafact Reports That 43.6% of Consumers Are Aware of RFID and 42.9% Think It's a GOOD Idea!

COLUMBUS, OH -- (MARKET WIRE) -- June 21, 2005 -- The fourth wave of the RFID Consumer Buzz study among 8,400 adults shows consumer awareness of RFID continuing to climb from just 28.2% in September last year to 43.6% in June 2005. This represents only a modest gain from March 2005, which suggests awareness is beginning to flatten. (See Chart 1 below)

Attitudes are stabilizing with two adults saying RFID technology is "a good idea" for every one that says it is "not a good idea." (See Chart 2 below)

Concerns that retailers would use RFID information for more than product tracking decreased this quarter as well. Compared to previous quarters, where over 67% were somewhat or very concerned about information being shared without their permission, this quarter just 58.7% expressed similar concerns.

"This shift is not surprising," said Linda Stegeman, President of Artafact. "We know from the qualitative research we conducted on this topic that the early-aware RFID consumers tended to have more concerns about privacy in general and RFID versus the mainstream population, whose views tended to be more balanced."
