Continuing problems at Hydro One reflect the need for change

Attention: Assignment Editor, Business/Financial Editor, Energy Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Dec. 6, 2006) - The Society of Energy Professionals representing engineers and other professionals at Hydro One voiced its concerns after the Provincial Auditor General released his report. "Yesterday's report is yet another wake up call for the need to make changes in the management of Hydro One," said Andrew Müller, President of the Society.

"During the recent hearings on Hydro One we called upon the government to implement a third party audit of Hydro One and a review of management's use of contractors as well as their management practices," said Müller. "The Provincial Auditor General's report confirms the need for reviews of Hydro One's financial practices."

Among Provincial Auditor General Jim McCarter's findings:

* $127M charged to Hydro One credit cards often with insufficient supporting documents.
* A Hydro One secretary charged $50,000 in goods and services most of which went to Tom Parkinson to whom she reported. He then approved the expenses, which exempted them from the annual review of senior executive expenses conducted by the Corporation's external auditor.

"Clearly these shoddy practices need to change at Hydro One," said Müller.
