Contract Talks Break Off in Three Cape Breton Nursing Homes

SYDNEY, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - Dec. 4, 2009) - Contract talks have broken off for three long term care facilities in Cape Breton.

The CUPE locals involved are Local 1562, with 125 employees at MacGillivray Nursing Home, Local 3630 with 60 employees at Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home and Local 1782, with 100 employees at Richmond Villa in St. Peters.

CUPE National Representative John Evans says, "CUPE represents all staff except the Registered Nurses in these facilities. Just like our counterparts in the hospital sector, the main issue in bargaining is maintaining the wage parity with nursing home workers in Halifax that has taken us ten years to achieve."

Evans says CUPE has now filed for assistance from a Conciliation Officer with the Department of Labour and Workforce Development.
