Contractors Association Sees Growth Potential with Budget Announcement

Construction Industry Will Benefit from Capital Spending and Increased Training Opportunities

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - March 27, 2015) - The 2015 Alberta budget was released on Thursday, March 26th, and among some of the big changes happening in Alberta's economy, the construction industry should see potential with several of the government's priorities.

The Government of Alberta has added apprentices and students in pre-apprenticeship programs to be included in the eligibility to receive student loans.

"This type of initiative on behalf of the government shows a dedication to an industry that builds the province, literally, and it makes access to necessary education in the trades easier," says Malcolm D. Kirkland, President of Merit Contractors Association. "It will provide opportunities for thousands of people across the province".

Continued access to publically funded apprenticeship training is a top priority for Merit Contractors Association as it provides great opportunity for Albertans to venture into construction as a career - continued investments in apprenticeship training infrastructure will ensure that space continues to be available to for Alberta students. With so much development happening and the provincial government making capital spending a priority, it means career opportunities and long-term financial stability for many Albertans.

The acknowledgement of the need to maintain current infrastructure is a much-appreciated addition to the government's list of priorities. "We know that in our industry, it is crucial to maintain the functionality and aesthetic of Alberta's infrastructure. We are pleased that our member companies will be kept busy ensuring that projects built today will be standing long into the future," says Kirkland.
