Convaid to Ship Donated Wheelchairs to Mission Emanuel in Dominican Republic

Convaid Donates 14 Pediatric Wheelchairs to Team Headed for Dominican Republic

TORRANCE, CA--(Marketwired - September 10, 2015) - Convaid, Inc., a Torrance-based manufacturer of custom-made, compact-folding, lightweight, adaptive-assisted wheelchairs, today announced that it is shipping 14 wheelchairs this week to the 9th Annual Focus on Rehabilitation by Mission Emanuel, a partnership ministry between Americans and Dominicans dedicated to solving root problems that will result in long-term positive effects on the Dominican people.

By mid-October 2015, the Convaid pediatric wheelchairs will be prescribed by a team of approximately 20 physical and occupational therapists to children in the Dominican Republic. Joining them are medical translators and wheelchair specialists who will join forces with local health services to provide a week-long educational seminar and wheelchair clinic to the Dominican Republic's largest rehabilitation center, the Association of Dominican Rehabilitation (ADR).

The program began in 2006 and last year, the organization held 20 lectures, improving clinical knowledge of the Dominican therapists and contributing hundreds of donated wheelchairs and healthcare equipment. Convaid's business development representative for the Central Region, Sally Mallory remains instrumental in organizing Convaid's on-going participation in this program.

The Convaid donation, logistically orchestrated by Maria Arias and Sally Mallory will send an assortment of upright, fixed-tilt and tilt-in-space pediatric wheelchairs to the Dominican children. These Convaid wheelchairs are typically prescribed for youth with mild to moderate involvement concurrent to the following conditions: Cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Spinal Bifida, Osteogenesis Imperfecta, Traumatic Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury, Cystic Fibrosis, Mitochondrial Disease, Metabolic Diseases, and Sensory Processing Disorders, among others.

"Convaid is delighted to share in Mission Emanuel's objective of gifting hope and mobility to children and youth in the Dominican Republic. It is equally important that we contribute product knowledge to the healthcare providers in this country who are responsible for so many. As the largest rehabilitation center in the Dominican Republic, with over 22 satellite centers throughout the country, we are confident that our donated wheelchairs will make a quality-of-life contribution to many children who otherwise would not have access to appropriate mobility," Convaid CEO Chris Braun said.

Last year, the Mission Emanuel team was able to see approximately 70 people for new equipment or to make adjustments on their existing mobility equipment. Since then, local therapists have been identifying and evaluating children who need complex rehab equipment, with a specific focus on children with Cerebral Palsy, Down syndrome and autism, conditions for which Convaid pediatric wheelchairs are typically best suited.

One of the mission's organizers, physical therapist Anna Harper said, "We treasure our relationships with the Dominicans, both therapists and patients and we are excited to continue this partnership with the Association of Dominican Rehabilitation. We believe we are truly increasing the quality of care across the nation by educating on the ground level and not just swooping in to do our work and leaving. We have seen growth in the level of knowledge of the Dominican health care providers over the last eight years that ultimately improves the quality of life for the child or the adult, but for the entire family."
