Convictions Under the Fisheries Act

QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - March 19, 2007) - Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Quebec Region, has published the list of fishers fined for various offences under the Fisheries Act.

The total amount of fines assessed on fishers in the Gaspe_Lower St Lawrence and North Shore is $16,095.24. In addition to paying fines, some offenders must perform community service and comply with very strict conditions. Some gear and other goods used in the fishing activities were also seized and the proceeds from the sale of illegally caught fish were forfeited.

In the Gaspe_Lower St Lawrence, fines totalling $1,628.24 were issued to offenders under the Fisheries Act, while on the North Shore, fines amounted to $14,467. Fines vary from $200 to $1,575 for offences such as illegal fishing without a permit and non-compliance with licence conditions.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada is mandated to protect and conserve marine resources and is ever alert for any poaching of marine resources.
