Cooley Welcomes IP Litigation Partner Joseph M. Drayton in New York

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - Jun 11, 2012) - Cooley LLP announced today that Joseph M. Drayton has joined the firm as a partner in its New York office. Drayton, who has a breadth of experience litigating intellectual property matters, has also handled complex commercial and antitrust matters throughout his career. He also counsels clients in all aspects of IP acquisition, transfer, protection and enforcement. Prior to joining Cooley, Drayton practiced with Kaye Scholer LLP in New York.

Over his fifteen year career, Drayton has practiced in both state and federal courts, as well as the International Trade Commission. Drayton has been a lead member of numerous patent trial teams, including four which he tried cases over the last five years. He is Chair of the Intellectual Property Litigation Committee of the American Bar Association's Section of Litigation, and in 2010 was named among the National Bar Association's Nation's Best Advocates: 40 Lawyers Under 40.

"Joe is a first-rate trial attorney who is making a name for himself in IP litigation circles," said Michael Rhodes, chair of Cooley's Litigation Department. "His arrival coincides with that of DeAnna Allen, another up-and-coming IP litigator, who is joining Cooley as a partner in our DC office. Together they enhance a firmwide IP litigation team that is garnering the recognition it deserves as one of this country's finest."

Cooley's IP group, comprised of approximately 110 lawyers and 50 other professionals, represents many of the world's leading technology and life sciences companies. The group was recognized in May 2012 by the National Law Journal in its first-ever 'IP Hot List' of the elite IP legal practices among US law firms.

"The momentum within Cooley's IP practice is palpable -- there is a true sense of collaboration among the team and it's hard to imagine a more dynamic and leading-edge client base," Drayton noted. "I could not be more excited to be joining Cooley and look forward to contributing to the on-going success of the IP team and the overall litigation practice."

Drayton received his J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, and his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, from the University of Maryland. Drayton is passionate about serving his community and has provided hundreds of hours of pro bono legal services, including trial work and representing indigent clients. Drayton's not for profit board service includes the Board of Governors for the University of Maryland Alumni Association, New York County Lawyers Association and the Metropolitan Black Bar Association of New York City.
