Corporate Managers Find New Solution to Role Overload

Attention: Assignment Editor, Business/Financial Editor, Lifestyle Editor, Media Editor, News Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Sept. 19, 2005) - More Canadian professionals are experiencing high 'role overload' than ever before. The number has grown over 25% since the early 90s, to 59% from 47% of employed Canadians. Professionals and managers in medium and large organizations are especially crunched, as their organizations become leaner and they face constant pressure to outperform.

Several new business services have emerged in response to the trend. Mezzanine Business Consulting is an example. The firm provides tactical consulting to managers and directors in large companies. "We work with professionals who don't have the resources to accomplish a particular short-term project, like a market assessment, competitive intelligence or a buyer behaviour analysis," says Lisa Shepherd, President and CEO of Mezzanine Business Consulting.

Formed in early 2002 by graduates from the Richard Ivey School of Business, Mezzanine has grown rapidly and was recently named one of Canada's fastest growing companies. Mezzanine identified at its start there was a shortage of outside expertise for middle managers. "We knew from our peers and from media coverage that corporate managers were overloaded and needed reliable outside intelligence," says Shepherd, "But they couldn't hire additional employees because of headcount restrictions, and the typical consulting offering was global strategy firms whose work came at a heavy price and didn't address their immediate needs."

Mezzanine gives managers short-term project help, market insights and an outside perspective. "We offer the expertise of an experienced manager, the structure and process of a consultant, and the ability to access market insight - all at an affordable price," says Mark Healy, Vice President Operations. "At the end of the day, we are brain power for managers."

Mezzanine's clients praise the company's services and unconventional approach to management consulting: "Mezzanine are the type of 'consultants' you want to work with," says Sandra Daniel, Director of Enterprise Marketing with Bell Mobility. "They provide us with the professional insight we need, quickly and at a reasonable price."

Mezzanine's own growth is evidence of the rising demand for its services. Named one of the Canada's fastest growing young companies by Profit Magazine this year in its sixth annual PROFIT HOT 50 ranking, Mezzanine is now seeing its growth accelerate. "This year alone we are experiencing triple-digit growth. As more managers learn about us, and realize that they do have a decent alternative to working 100-hour weeks, we're growing even faster," says Shepherd.
