Corporate world Teams with PMI Dallas and Children's Medical Center to provide training for Dallas Youth

PMI Dallas and Global Conductor take a bold step to provide real world experiences for Dallas Youth

DALLAS, TX--(Marketwired - May 10, 2017) - Parents and corporate leaders both see the gap -- a good education for our kids, and good talent for our companies, are hard to find. The US youth unemployment rate is nearly double that of the national average. Many believe the lack of communication and partnership between the educational system and the labor market's needs is a big factor.

How can we prepare our students to be successful in the labor market?

This is where Management Consultants thrive -- seeing a problem, finding a cause, and solving it. The Project Management Institute -- Dallas Chapter (PMI Dallas) and Global Conductor Management Consulting have teamed up to give real-life experience in new opportunities and career paths to underprivileged youth in Dallas, and most importantly, show them how to rise above and thrive.

"We are honored and excited to sponsor and directly participate in the program," says Shanon Seward, VP of Global Conductor Management Consulting, the lead sponsor of the program. "It's so important to get these tools in the hands of young people, at a younger age. This experience gives them an advantage in learning some of the most important skills in business -- how to plan, organize, communicate and involve others in work -- that you don't necessarily learn in school. This one thing can be the key to helping them be more successful throughout their lives."

This initiative began in 2014 and has grown to achieve local and national attention. PMI Dallas selected students from Skyline High School to complete a real-life project. Partnering with Children's Medical Center, students manufactured and supplied activity books and crafts to sick children and families in desperate situations.

Students were assigned typical project management roles, and were led through the same process a company would use in a large project. They managed budgets, vendors, deadlines, and had a real-life customer -- Children's Medical Center and the sick children -- expecting them to deliver. Global Conductor Management Consulting brought mentors from consulting firms and local companies to guide the students through their project, and provide a real world perspective.

The students had challenges, too. From working as a team and holding each other accountable, to copyright issues and vendors not delivering on schedule -- there were plenty of bumps along the road.

"It was important for everyone to go beyond concepts," explained Susan Kennedy, President of PMI Dallas Chapter. "The students' primary goal was to help sick children, but they saw it wasn't easy, and that just being present isn't enough. Each student's role within the team mattered, and communication and accountability became critical to success. Without a doubt, these real-life experiences will better prepare them for the challenges that life, and business, will bring them."

"The pride and growth these students attained was palpable and immeasurable. Their eyes were opened to a bigger world, and their chances of success are now significantly increased," said Talibah Adenouga, who created the course using PMIef (PMI Educational Foundation) concepts. There are a multitude of economic pressures and problems these children will face. PMI Dallas and Global Conductor have taken a bold step in the right direction, proving that innovative partnerships can find solutions.
