CORRECTION FROM SOURCE/CIDA: Canada Supports International Development Work of Toronto-Based Organizations

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 10, 2005) - The following corrects and replaces the release sent earlier today (9:26 AM EST).

The Honourable Carolyn Bennett, Member of Parliament for St. Paul's today announced on behalf of the Honourable Aileen Carroll, Minister of International Cooperation that the Canadian International development agency (CIDA) will provide $11.7 million to support international development work by a Toronto-based organization.

"This initiative highlight Canada's commitment to international development and provide an example of how Canadian organizations, in particular those that are based in Toronto, are making a difference in the world," Minister Bennett said.

The initiative called Children's Millennium Program will be managed by Foster Parents Plan. This five-year program will build local capacity towards realizing the Millennium Development Goals in five countries: Bolivia; Indonesia; Mali; Sierra Leone; and Uganda. The goal is to improve access to quality health and education services for girls and boys with emphasis on the protection of children's rights based on the values of justice, human rights, and gender equality. Foster Parents Plan will work with community-based organizations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in these countries to achieve the objectives of this program. "Helping developing countries realize the Millennium Development Goals and supporting them promote the rule of law is commendable work," Minister Carroll said. "It is particularly notable that this initiative will help children in these countries."

Funding for this initiative was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
