HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwired - Nov. 8, 2013) -

A contract offer from the Progress Centre for Early Intervention in Halifax with no wage increases has been rejected by members of CUPE Local 5054.

CUPE National Representative Naomi Stewart says, "In a very emotional vote this week, the staff voted overwhelmingly to reject the offer. While they are torn between striking and making ends meet, this is a group of workers who haven't seen their starting salary increase for 15 years."

Says Stewart, "The members of Local 5054 have been trying to negotiate a first contract for two-and-a-half years now and lay the blame squarely on inadequate funding from the province. The issue of wages in this sector must be addressed."

CUPE says while the pattern established in wage settlements tied to provincial funding has included increases of 7.5% over three years, this sector's salary levels are so low that they will require an additional wage adjustment.

CUPE represents 13 employees at the Progress Centre including Early Interventionists, Library Technicians, Administrative Assistants and Playgroup Co-ordinators.

The members of Local 5054 voted 100% in favour of strike action this past May.
