CORRECTION FROM SOURCE: Strike vote tonight for Mount Pearl municipal workers

MOUNT PEARL, NEW FOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR--(Marketwired - Sept. 18, 2014) - The 140 members of CUPE Local 2099, inside and outside workers with the City of Mount Pearl, will hold a strike vote tonight, at 7:00 pm at the Mount Pearl Hotel.

CUPE National Representative Ed O'Keefe says, "Based on the city's offer to us to date, the union expects a large turnout for the vote and a strong strike mandate from our members."

O'Keefe says while they are currently in conciliation, talks are not going well. They are in a legal strike or lockout position as of today, September 18.

Outstanding issues include retiree benefits, wages and the TRIO pension plan.

Local President Bob Martin says, "We are trying to rectify an inequity within our group insurance plan. Currently, management employees enjoy group insurance benefits for life after they retire but Local 2099 members are cut off at age 70. This is despite the fact that we have offered to have Local 2099 retired members pay 100% of the premium cost which is what they currently do until they are cut off at age 70."

"This issue alone is enough to prompt our members to vote for job action," says Martin.
