The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, Saturday addressed a large crowd of Canadian Forces members, Veterans, and their families at the Canadian Veterans National Rendezvous 2011.

"This event is a wonderful way to mark the end of the combat mission in Afghanistan and to honour those who have served so valiantly in Afghanistan and in so many other important missions over the years," said Minister Blaney. "Our Veterans have always upheld our Canadian values of freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law. This weekend is a chance for Canadians to thank our Veterans, Canadian Forces members and their families for their service and sacrifices."

The three-day event, spearheaded by the Canadian Veterans Advocacy, provided an opportunity to celebrate the return of Canadian troops from Afghanistan while honouring those who have served in every major war, combat operation, and peacekeeping mission since the end of the Second World War.

Minister Blaney took part in the official opening ceremony Saturday and had the opportunity to meet Veterans, Canadian Forces members and their families.

"As Minister of Veterans Affairs, I am taking every opportunity I can this summer to learn more about the Canadian Forces and listen to Veterans' personal stories of sacrifice and success," said Minister Blaney. "Hearing first-hand about their experiences has given me a greater understanding of their needs and strengthened my commitment to make sure those who have served have the tools and support they need to make a successful return to civilian life."

Veterans Affairs Canada staff members were on site at the Canadian Veterans National Rendezvous 2011, operating a display booth to provide information and answer questions on programs and services available to Veterans and members of the Canadian Forces and to Veterans of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
