Correctional Service of Canada: Escape Lawful Custody Stan Daniels Healing Centre: Offender Aaron Evan Nathan SMITH

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - May 4, 2009) - At approximately 21:40 on Sunday May 3, 2009, inmate Aaron Smith walked away from the Stan Daniels Healing Centre in Edmonton, AB. Edmonton Police Services were notified.

Offender Aaron Smith is a 21-year old federal offender serving a 4-year, 9-month sentence for Manslaughter and Fail to Comply (x2). Smith initially commenced his sentence on July 30, 2007. He was eligible for Full Parole on February 27, 2009. He is Aboriginal, has a medium complexion, short black hair, and brown eyes. He has tattoos covering both arms, and a scar on his right forearm.

Anyone with information as to the whereabouts of Offender Smith is asked to contact police.

The Stan Daniels Healing Center is operated and staffed by Native Counselling Services of Alberta (NCSA) and is located at 9516 101 Avenue in downtown Edmonton. NCSA provides a range of spiritual and correctional programs to both offenders on conditional release and minimum security inmates through agreement with the Solicitor General of Canada. At the time of the incident, there were 14 inmates and 40 conditionally released offenders residing at the Stan Daniels Healing Center.

The Correctional Service of Canada and Native Counselling Services of Alberta will be conducting a joint investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
