Correctional Service of Canada: Government of Canada Announces Expansion of Two Federal Penitentiaries in Southern Alberta

Supports commitment to building stronger communities and safer streets

DRUMHELLER, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Aug. 31, 2010) - Today, Kevin Sorenson, Member of Parliament for Crowfoot, on behalf of the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, announced that Correctional Service of Canada is increasing its capacity within Drumheller Institution and Bowden Institution. This additional capacity is part of the government's plan to help ensure that criminals serve sentences that reflect the severity of their crimes.

"Our Government is committed to ensuring a fair and effective corrections system with a priority to protect Canadians," said Sorenson, on behalf of Minister Toews. "We need to ensure our prisons are safe to work in, are free of illicit drugs and are rehabilitating offenders effectively so that both our corrections staff and our communities are protected. The expansion of Drumheller and Bowden Institutions is the next step in helping ensure that criminals serve sentences that better reflect the severity of their crimes."

These expansions will involve the construction of 96 new medium-security beds at both Drumheller and Bowden institutions. As well, each institution's minimum-security annex will be expanded by an additional 50 beds. It is anticipated that the new accommodation spaces will be completed in 2012-13. The investment in both institutions will total $50 million.

"In the previous system, a violent criminal sentenced to nine years in prison could potentially be on our streets in as little as three years if he or she spent two years awaiting trial. This possibility is not acceptable to Canadians," said Sorenson. "The protection of Canadians must come first. Part of keeping our communities safe is keeping dangerous criminals behind bars - not releasing them onto our streets early."

It is anticipated that over the coming years, CSC will be adding over 2,700 beds to men's and women's facilities across Canada.
