Correctional Service of Canada: Inmate Disturbance and Lockdown at Stony Mountain Institution


STONY MOUNTAIN, MANITOBA--(Marketwire - Aug. 22, 2011) - On Monday, August 22, at approximately 11:45 a.m. Stony Mountain Institution was placed on lockdown as a result of inmates refusing to lock up on one unit. An emergency response team has been placed on standby. Negotiations by correctional staff are underway. All other ranges were locked down in order to maintain the security of the facility.

All visits have been cancelled until further notice. The Institution will return to normal operations once the Warden determines it is safe to do so.

CSC reviews the circumstances surrounding all incidents of this nature. Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.

Stony Mountain Institution is a medium security federal penitentiary located 11 km north of Winnipeg, currently accommodating 578 inmates.
