Correctional Service Canada Partners with Habitat for Humanity

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 4, 2005) - Correctional Service Canada: Federal inmates from Bowden Institution, a medium-security institution in Innisfail, Alberta, give back to the community by participating in a Habitat for Humanity Community Development Project. The inmates completed an eight-week Construction Framing Skills program followed by a three-week practical skills component working on a Habitat for Humanity home building project in Calgary, AB.

Corinne Hagerman, Chief Executive Officer of CORCAN, and Senior Correctional Service Canada (CSC) Managers will conduct a site visit to the building project to present the inmates with Program Certificates issued by the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.

"I am pleased that CORCAN and Habitat for Humanity have joined together for this innovative partnership," says Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada, the Honourable Anne McLellan. "This project is a clear demonstration of the value of the CORCAN program which strives to provide offenders with the skills they will need to return to society and become productive employees and citizens."

CORCAN is CSC's employment and employability skills program for offenders.

"Almost all federal offenders will eventually return to the community," says John Schmal, Member of the CORCAN Advisory Board. "Rehabilitation and safe reintegration reflect the values of a correctional system where the protection of Canadian society is its primary role."

Habitat for Humanity is a charitable organization dedicated to the eradication of poverty housing.

Media are invited to attend this event.
