Correctional Service of Canada: Assault at Bowden Institution

INNISFAIL, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Nov. 15, 2008) - At approximately 10 p.m. on November 14, 2008 an inmate of Bowden Institution was assaulted. The injured inmate, age 46, was immediately escorted to the nearest outside hospital for medical care. He was subsequently taken via Air Ambulance to a hospital in Edmonton where he remains in critical but stable condition.

The inmate remains in outside hospital for treatment.

Police have been notified and an investigation into the incident is underway.

In order to improve its practices and prevent and reduce future incidents, the Correctional Service of Canada will continue to work with police in an effort to review the circumstances surrounding the incident and take action where necessary.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff and the public remains the highest priority of the operations of the federal correctional system.

Bowden Instituion is currently in lockdown as a result of the assault.

Bowden Institution is a federal institution for medium security inmates located between Calgary and Red Deer on the QE 2 Highway. There are currently 663 inmates at Bowden Institution.
