Correctional Service of Canada Celebrates 30 Years of Exemplary Service

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Sept. 15, 2014) - Correctional Service Canada

His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada along with Mr. Don Head, Commissioner of the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC), celebrated earlier today the 30th anniversary of the creation of the Corrections Exemplary Service Medal at a ceremony in Ottawa attended by 36 recipients.

"I am pleased that our federal correctional employees are getting the recognition they so strongly deserve," says the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness. "They are critical to our efforts of ensuring safe streets and communities for all Canadians."

Established in 1984, the Corrections Exemplary Service Medal recognizes employees of the Canadian Correctional Service who have served in an exemplary manner, characterized by good conduct, industry and efficiency.

"In conferring these medals today," says Commissioner Don Head, "we are recognizing the unique role of Canadian correctional employees in helping preserve public safety in Canada. The Corrections Exemplary Service Medal not only recognizes their countless acts of professionalism and compassion, but is also the embodiment of our motto of changing lives and protecting Canadians."

In addition to having demonstrated excellence in public service, recipients have completed at least 20 years of full-time service, including 10 years either as a peace officer in an institution, parole officer or probation officer, or in a capacity which has brought them into contact with offenders in the regular performance of duties with one or more of the correctional services in Canada.

"The number of medals that were awarded in Ottawa today is small compared to the hundreds that are awarded across Canada throughout the year to federal correctional staff," says Commissioner Head. "I am extremely proud of the CSC workforce and the work that they do on behalf of Canadians every day."
