WINNIPEG, MANITOBA--(Marketwire - Jan. 12, 2011) - On January 10, 2011, staff seized drugs and contraband items from a visitor who attended Stony Mountain Institution. The seizures were the result of combined efforts by Correctional Officers, the Detector Dog Team, and Security Intelligence Officers.

Tobacco, smoking paraphernalia, morphine, and steroids were seized. The institutional value of the seizure has been estimated at $49,000.00. The visitor was arrested by the Stonewall detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and is facing criminal charges.

Correctional Service Canada (CSC) has a number of tools available that are consistently used in our efforts to control the flow of drugs into our institutions. These tools include ion scanners and drug dogs to search buildings, offenders, and visitors.

As part of its Transformation Agenda, CSC has strengthened measures to prevent contraband from entering institutions, in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone, and promote a rehabilitative environment for inmates. CSC also works in partnership with the police to prosecute inmates and others who attempt to have contraband brought into correctional institutions.

Stony Mountain Institution wishes to remind citizens that there is a confidential Security Intelligence Tip Line at (204) 344-6000 for reporting concerns regarding institutional drug trafficking. If you have information about this incident or any serious crime in Rural Manitoba, you can contact your nearest police service or RCMP detachment. If you wish to remain ANONYMOUS, CALL: Manitoba Crime Stoppers toll free at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS). CSC is committed to working with its partners at the RCMP toward their shared goal of ensuring the safety of the public.
