Correctional Service of Canada: Contraband Seizure at Stony Mountain Institution


WINNIPEG, MANITOBA--(Marketwire - Jan. 12, 2011) - On January 10, 2011, staff seized drugs and contraband items from a visitor who attended Stony Mountain Institution. The seizures were the result of combined efforts by Correctional Officers, the Detector Dog Team, and Security Intelligence Officers.

Tobacco, smoking paraphernalia, morphine, and steroids were seized. The institutional value of the seizure has been estimated at $49,000.00. The visitor was arrested by the Stonewall detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and is facing criminal charges.

Correctional Service Canada (CSC) has a number of tools available that are consistently used in our efforts to control the flow of drugs into our institutions. These tools include ion scanners and drug dogs to search buildings, offenders, and visitors. 

As part of its Transformation Agenda, CSC has strengthened measures to prevent contraband from entering institutions, in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone, and promote a rehabilitative environment for inmates. CSC also works in partnership with the police to prosecute inmates and others who attempt to have contraband brought into correctional institutions.
