Correctional Service of Canada: Death at Stony Mountain Institution

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA--(Marketwire - April 17, 2008) - On April 16, 2008, an inmate at Stony Mountain Institution died of an unknown cause. While the exact cause of death has not been confirmed, foul play is not suspected.

The inmate was found in his cell in medical distress and was transported to an outside hospital where he later died.

The inmate was 46 years old and serving a life sentence for second degree murder. The identity of the inmate is not being released pending notification of the next of kin.

As in all cases where an individual dies while in custody, the police and coroner are called in to investigate. In addition, the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Stony Mountain Institution is a federal institution for medium security inmates located 11 kilometers north of Winnipeg. There are currently 559 inmates at the facility.
