Correctional Service of Canada: Escape from A Temporary Absence


WINNIPEG, MANITOBA--(Marketwire - May 20, 2011) - At approximately 4:00 pm on May 19, 2011, inmate Stefan MCKENZIE from Ochichakkosipi Healing Lodge escaped during an escorted temporary absence in Winnipeg.

Police were notified and a warrant for the inmate's arrest was issued.

MCKENZIE, 25 years of age, is serving 2 years for Armed Robbery.

MCKENZIE weighs approximately 86 kilograms (197 pounds), and is 185 cm (6' 1"). He has a medium complexion with brown eyes and black hair.

Anyone with information as to the whereabouts of MCKENZIE is asked to contact police.

Temporary Absences from federal correctional institutions may be granted for a variety of reasons. These absences are subjected to a stringent approval process and only granted when determined to be in keeping with the interests of public safety.

Ochichakkosipi Healing Lodge is operated by the Crane River First Nation under an agreement with the federal Minister of Public Safety. The healing lodge provides a range of spiritual and cultural programs to minimum security federal inmates and is located on the Crane River First Nation 350 km northwest of Winnipeg.

The Correctional Service of Canada and Ochichakkosipi Healing Lodge will be conducting a joint investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and are working with the Winnipeg Police Service to locate the offender.
