Correctional Service of Canada: Hostage Taking at Regional Psychiatric Centre


REGIONAL PSYCHIATRIC CENTRE, SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN--(Marketwire - June 19, 2011) - On Sunday, June 19 2011, at approximately 1500 hours, a patient at the Regional Psychiatric Centre (Prairies) barricaded himself in a room with three staff members. Correctional Officers responded immediately and the patient was taken under control. No staff members were physically injured in the incident. The patient involved has been transferred to another institution.

City of Saskatoon Police Service is currently investigating. As in all situations of this manner, Correctional Services of Canada will work with City of Saskatoon Police in an effort to review the circumstances surrounding this incident and take action where necessary.

The Regional Psychiatric Centre is a multi-level psychiatric hospital located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and operated by the Correctional Service of Canada through an affiliation agreement with the University of Saskatchewan. The Centre provides assessment, intensive programming, treatment for mental disorders, and 24-hour medical care to individuals from the federal and provincial justice systems. There are currently 187 patients receiving assessment and/or treatment at the Centre.
