Correctional Service of Canada: Inmate Assault and Lockdown at Bowden Institution


INNISFAIL, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - March 1, 2011) - On Monday February 28, 2011 at approximately 9:40 p.m., Correctional Officers observed an inmate showing visible signs of injury. Staff took immediate action and provided first aid to the victim. The victim was found to have stab wounds and was transported to hospital via ambulance where he remains in stable condition. Following the assault the institution was placed on general lockdown.

The Correctional Service of Canada and the RCMP are investigating the incident. Bowden Institution remains locked down to facilitate the investigative process. Inmate visits have been cancelled for the duration of the lock down. The institution will return to normal routine when the Warden is satisfied that it is safe to do so.

Bowden Institution is a federal penitentiary located between Innisfail and Bowden, Alberta. Currently, there are 565 offenders located at the medium security facility and 73 at the minimum security annex.
