Correctional Service of Canada: Lockdown and Search at Grande Cache Institution


GRANDE CACHE, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Nov. 8, 2011) - At approximately 6:52 p.m. on November 7, 2011, Grande Cache Institution was placed on lockdown following a serious assault against an inmate and to facilitate the search of a living unit. The inmate was transported to an Edmonton hospital with serious injuries. Grande Cache RCMP was called to the Grande Cache Institution and is currently investigating the incident.

The search is being conducted to ensure the ongoing safety and security of the institution, its staff and the inmates. The institution will return to normal routine when institutional management determines it is safe to do so.

Regularly scheduled visits to the institution may be affected. Those who have previously scheduled visits are asked to contact the institution directly.

In order to improve its practices to prevent and reduce future incidents, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will continue to work in an effort to review the circumstances surrounding the incident and take action where necessary.
