Correctional Service of Canada: Ruptured Gas Line at Rockwood Institution

STONY MOUNTAIN, MANITOBA--(Marketwire - Jan. 25, 2011) - On Tuesday, January 25, 2011, at approximately 1430 hours, contractors hit and ruptured an unmarked gas line at Rockwood Institution. All gas lines to the institution have been turned off. Inmates from two houses have been evacuated to neighbouring Stony Mountain Institution and will be returned later this evening.

Manitoba Hydro is on-site and is in the process of repairing the ruptured gas line. The institutional routine will be returned to normal when management feels it is safe to do so. Regularly scheduled visits are cancelled at this time.

Ensuring the safety and security of the institution, staff, inmates, and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.

Rockwood Institution is a federally operated minimum security institution located 11 kilometers north of Winnipeg and adjacent to Stony Mountain Institution currently accommodating 129 offenders.
