Cotap Fulfills HIPAA Safeguard Requirements as Business Associate

Healthcare Employees Can Now Use Cotap to Communicate ePHI Without Compromising HIPAA Compliance

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwired - February 23, 2015) - Cotap, an enterprise mobile messaging service, today announced it has met all of the security standards set forth by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to be compliant as a Business Associate. Cotap achieved compliance across all administrative, technical and physical safeguards through work with an independent, third-party auditor. Additionally, the company now encrypts data at rest and in transit to further enforce the security and privacy of customer data.

According to the Health Research Institute, 81 percent of physicians use a smartphone to communicate protected health information or access patient data via their personal mobile devices. Yet, a single violation for an unsecured communication can result in a fine of $50,000 and repeated violations can lead to millions in fines in a single year.

"It is critically important that we have every safeguard in place to serve our healthcare customers in a way that protects the confidentiality and integrity of their patients' electronic personal health information," said Jim Patterson, CEO, Cotap. "By signing Business Associate Agreements we can ensure Cotap is prepared to meet all HIPAA compliance needs from health care providers, insurance companies, pharmacies and clearinghouses."

Healthcare workers can use Cotap to create groups for making clinical decisions as well as securely sharing lab results, patient procedures, and medical histories, among many other use cases. Cotap can also replace the need for pagers and frequent call-backs in a hospital setting.

Cotap is one of only a few messaging services to sign HIPAA Business Associate Agreements. All businesses that engage in the handling, maintenance, storage or exchange of private health or patient-related information, are subject to HIPAA and must be committed to the confidentiality, integrity and availability of all protected electronic information.
