COTEMAR Deploys AeroScout RTLS to Enhance Offshore Platform Safety, Security and Efficiency

The AeroScout Worker Safety Solution Tracks the Location of All Staff and Guests on Four Vessels That Support Oil & Gas Platforms

MEXICO CITY--(Marketwire - Nov 29, 2011) - RFID Journal Live LatAm Conference -- AeroScout®, the leading provider of Unified Asset Visibility for improved operational efficiency, today announced that COTEMAR, S.A. de C.V., is using AeroScout's Real-Time Location System (RTLS) to enhance safety on four offshore housing platforms. The AeroScout Worker Safety Solution also improves security and operational efficiency on the vessels, which are located in the Gulf of Mexico.

The four semi-submersible platforms, nicknamed "flotels" (as in floating hotels), each provide living quarters for about 150 crew and service personnel and 500 guests who work on or support nearby, offshore oil and gas platforms operated by Mexico's largest petroleum company. COTEMAR uses the AeroScout solution to automatically track the location of everyone who comes onboard or leaves one of the flotels, providing the officers of each vessel with critical information in case of an emergency.

The AeroScout Worker Safety solution used by COTEMAR includes AeroScout MobileView™ software and intrinsically safe Wi-Fi RFID Tags attached to a lanyard that must be worn by every staff member, guest and visitor during their stay at one of the facilities. The solution allows personnel to come and go from the platforms without having to wait in long lines to check in or check out, and provides information about who is onboard and who is not at any given moment.

The AeroScout solution can also provide "mustering" capabilities, ensuring that in the case of an emergency, personnel are gathered at specific locations and their presence is efficiently confirmed and recorded. Search and rescue crews can then be dispatched to find any missing personnel. At present, the solution implemented by COTEMAR aids emergency operations by providing visibility into which personnel are on the accommodation platforms. The solution could be expanded in the future to provide the same real-time location tracking on the oil rigs and to fully automate the mustering process.

"Safety is a top priority for us, but we also want guests to be comfortable and to be able to move about with relative ease," said Pedro Salguero, Chief of IT at COTEMAR. "We found that solutions based on Passive RFID simply aren't suitable and can't stand up to the rigors, technical requirements, and harsh conditions of offshore platforms. However, AeroScout's RTLS solution, which is based on its industry-leading Active RFID tags, has proven to be the ideal solution for our needs."

In addition to enhancing safety, COTEMAR also uses the AeroScout solution for security and operational efficiency on the four platforms. For instance, the solution is configured to track and report when personnel enter unauthorized areas. Tracking the location of personnel also gives COTEMAR better visibility into the operations of its offshore platforms, enabling the company to see which services and facilities workers have used. For example, it can record how many times a guest accesses the food services, and automatically send the information to COTEMAR's onboard management system, making the billing process more efficient.

"We've come to realize just how powerful and versatile AeroScout's Real-Time Location System is, and we're now exploring additional uses for it, including tracking and managing high-value equipment," Salguero added.

"Offshore platforms such as COTEMAR's vessels are extremely complex environments that can benefit significantly from real-time visibility solutions," said Ricardo C. Berrios, Vice President and General Manager, Latin America, at AeroScout. "The COTEMAR deployment demonstrates how well AeroScout solutions perform under even the most difficult conditions -- we are especially proud of this project given the important safety and security benefits received."
