Could Your IT Organization Use Some REST?

Burton Group Releases Suite of Complimentary Resources to Help Clarify REST and Identify When It's Wise to Get Some

SALT LAKE CITY, UT--(Marketwire - August 21, 2007) - Burton Group, an IT research firm focused on enterprise infrastructure technologies, today announced the availability of a suite of complimentary resources to help IT organizations better understand Representational State Transfer (REST), an architectural style for distributed systems.

According to Peter Lacey, Burton Group senior consultant, REST defines a series of constraints in the design of distributed systems that together can achieve an application architecture offering reliability, scalability and high performance.

"RESTful systems make information and services more accessible, simpler and evolvable over time, thus supporting Burton Group's Application Platform Strategies 2008 team mantra: build for today, architect for tomorrow," says Lacey.

Though first described by Dr. Roy Fielding in 2000, REST has recently become more visible in the IT community due to product announcements from Microsoft and IBM, active development in the open source community, and ongoing discussions in IT trade journals and the blogosphere. However, Lacey asserts REST is still foreign to many organizations, and the questions are mounting: What is it? Should we use REST?

Burton Group believes REST represents an important development in the industry, and is offering a suite of complimentary REST resources to help IT organizations understand and evaluate REST. These resources include:

-- Burton Group Take 5 audio enhanced overview of REST

-- Peter Lacey's REST Workshop presentation that includes a technical look at the REST architectural style, contrasts it with other forms of distributed computing, and describes how to build RESTful systems. Voted number one by attendees at Catalyst 2007 Conference.

-- A series of blog posts to encourage industry discussion about REST on Burton Group's Application Platform Strategies Blog

REST will also be topic of discussion at Burton Group Catalyst Conference Europe, October 23-25, Barcelona, Spain. A detailed conference agenda can be found at
