Countdown to the El Paso Corporation 5K Race Weekend in Houston

HOUSTON, TX--(Marketwire - January 25, 2011) - As world-class runners converge on downtown this weekend to compete in Houston's largest single-day sporting event, many local runners and families are gearing up to run in the El Paso Corporation 5K (EP5K). Limited to 4,500 runners, the EP5K is often referred to as Houston's Fun Run for a good reason.

"We do everything we can to make sure the EP5K is family-friendly and accessible," said John Sousa, Vice President of Communications and Community Relations at El Paso Corporation, the EP5K's sponsor for the last four years.

Hundreds of El Paso employees will be volunteering Friday and Saturday at the Memorial Hermann Sports Medicine EXPO event at the George R. Brown Convention Center helping people either register for the EP5K or pick up their racing packets if they've already registered on-line.

"As downtown neighbors, we are excited to be a part of the incredible growth in popularity and stature of Houston's premier running event," Sousa said. "In addition to our volunteers, we will also have more than 200 employees running in one of the races, including three from our locations across the country who won a trip to Houston to run. Our deep level of commitment and participation in the EP5K also reflects a culture of health that we have built at El Paso through a program called Choose Well." The company also offers a downtown fitness center free to employees, annual health screenings, and year-round opportunities to learn more about healthy living.

Race sponsorship also includes an opportunity to support the local community by selecting a Run for a Reason charity to support as a Sidewalk Squad sponsor. Last year, the program raised $1.8 million for charities. This year, El Paso is proud to have selected SEARCH Homeless Services as its Run for a Reason charity.

El Paso Corporation provides natural gas and related energy products in a safe, efficient, and dependable manner. The company owns North America's largest interstate natural gas pipeline system and one of North America's largest independent natural gas producers. For more information, visit
