Covanta Continues Commitment to Safety -- Covanta Field Service's Florida Maintenance Shop and Mid-Atlantic Crew Named OSHA VPP STARs

U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration Recognizes Exemplary Health and Safety Practices

MORRISTOWN, NJ--(Marketwired - Oct 7, 2013) -  Covanta Energy Corporation, a world leader in sustainable waste management and renewable energy, is pleased to announce that the Covanta Field Services (CFS) maintenance and fabrication shop in Hernando, Fla. and the Covanta Field Services Mid-Atlantic mobile workforce have earned STAR status in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Voluntary Protection Program (OSHA VPP).

Covanta Field Services teams travel to Covanta's Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facilities to perform maintenance activities, typically during scheduled boiler outages. The CFS work is instrumental in assuring Covanta's boilers, turbine generators and cranes perform at optimal levels. The CFS shop in Hernando fabricates boiler tubes for Covanta boilers and applies inconel alloys to boiler tubes to enhance performance at high combustion temperatures. The shop also prepares other essential equipment for Covanta's EfW facilities.

VPP STAR status is the highest honor awarded to organizations with comprehensive, successful safety and health management systems. Workplaces and work teams such as CFS are committed to effective employee protection beyond the requirements of federal standards and participants develop and implement systems to effectively identify, evaluate, prevent, and control occupational hazards to prevent injuries and illnesses.

"I could not be more proud of the CFS Mid-Atlantic crew and the team at the CFS Hernando shop for achieving VPP STAR status. The nature of their work demands attention to safety and detail and it is their steadfast commitment to a safety culture has led to a tremendous record and this well-deserved honor," said Seth Myones, Covanta Energy executive vice president and chief operating officer. "Safety is central to our success and OSHA's VPP program has helped us build a world-class program that keeps employees safe and healthy."

The keys to health and safety success under the VPP program are employee engagement and ongoing involvement in on-site health and safety program development, combined with long term commitment and support from management. VPP STAR recipients routinely incur injury and illness rates that are at or below the state average for their specific industry.

Continuous improvement of health and safety programs is central to Covanta's corporate and workplace cultures and has led to 41 of Covanta's North American facilities earning the prestigious VPP STAR status.
