Coversant Releases Industry's Most Advanced Platform for Custom Development and Deployment of Highly Scalable Collaborative Instant Messaging Solutions

RIPL Corp. Chooses SoapBox Platform 2007 as Offering the Most Comprehensive Solution Among Enterprise Instant Messaging Vendors

SACRAMENTO, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- December 19, 2006 -- Coversant, the first provider of inter-enterprise Collaborative Messaging software, today announced the release of SoapBox Platform 2007 -- the industry's most advanced offering for custom development and deployment of highly scalable collaborative IM solutions. Independently verified tests(1) proved performance benchmarks of up to 250,000 concurrent users and 5,000 messages per second on a single SoapBox Server -- further making it the most affordable platform for scaling instant messaging applications to serve large user populations. These results are nearly double the performance of competing XMPP-based servers in the Enterprise Instant Messaging space.

RIPL Corp. of Seattle, an operator of next-generation social networking applications, recently selected the SoapBox Platform 2007 as its collaborative messaging solution of choice after a battery of independent tests at HP Labs. "We looked carefully at the other XMPP messaging solutions out there," explains Bill Messing, a former executive at MSN and who is now CEO of RIPL. "We agreed on the Coversant platform after determining it was the lowest cost to own and operate, both per server and per user. They are worlds ahead of the competitors we evaluated in both scalability and responsiveness, and we can see them coming to dominate their market within several years."

SoapBox Platform 2007 includes updates to the company's flagship SoapBox Server and the SoapBox Studio suite of software development kits, the latter recently made freely available (see "Coversant Open Sources SDKs," 11/28/06). The SoapBox Platform is ideal for independent software vendors (ISVs), Internet service providers (ISPs), and other custom development organizations that build and deploy community-driven web applications or mobile service offerings for social networking, online auction, online community, and other Web 2.0 destinations. For corporate enterprises, SoapBox Platform 2007 supports increased numbers of federated servers across more domains to foster secure collaboration across business boundaries to all of a company's external customers, partners, and suppliers.

Jason Frankel, CEO of Coversant, states, "The need for IM in the always-on enterprise is evolving -- yet other providers are not stepping up to the challenge of this marketplace. Customers are demanding support for more collaborative processes, among more workers, across more domains, without geographic borders -- but with no loss in performance. We have answered the market's demand for a turnkey way to build secure collaboration into presence-aware applications that are interconnected and interoperable with today's heterogeneous environments. Coversant's SoapBox Platform 2007 is now simply the industry's most advanced platform on which to build and administer future-proof messaging applications."

SoapBox Platform 2007 release includes the following new features:

-- High message throughput from a singer server, maximizing existing
hardware and network bandwidth and resulting in a 10x lower total cost of
    ownership than leading competitors.
-- Robust security, user access and authentication controls, including
single sign-on and turnkey user access to leading directories including
Windows Server Active Directory, NT LAN, Novell eDirectory, Sun One
Directory Server, LDAP, and open source solutions.
-- The first XMPP server for Intel's Itanium 2 processor, with IA64
support, through Coversant's partnerships with HP and Intel. These
alliances in combination with its partnership with AMD grant Coversant
access to the best performance test labs in the world.
-- End-to-end 64 bit support, with x86 and x64 in addition to IA64.
-- Virtual Server hosting, of up to 1,000 Virtual SoapBox Servers on a
single SoapBox Server 2007 Enterprise Edition.
-- Interoperability improvements, including support for the Microsoft
.NET 2.0 development environment, 64-bit support, Microsoft SQL Server
2005, Postgres, MySQL, and Oracle 9i+.
-- Server administration improvements, for uncluttered scale and
performance including new features for inter-domain management (e.g. white-
    listing, blacklisting, etc.)
-- Compatibility with popular XMPP networks, such as Google Talk and
    Apple iChat.
-- Three new SoapBox Studio 2007 SDKs: Solaris, Administration, and
    Server Extension.
According to Gartner Research, IT organizations are struggling with how to settle on an enterprise instant messaging standard that offers real-time inter-enterprise communications while remaining fully secure and integrated with existing infrastructure investments. Public IM offerings (i.e. AOL, MSN, Yahoo!) provide none of this, and leave organizations open to significant vulnerabilities such as virus proliferation, intrusion access, and intellectual property disclosures over the public network. Presence-aware applications also lessen corporate dependence on email and phone systems for effective collaboration.

SoapBox Platform 2007 is a complete platform consisting of three SoapBox Server options (Express, Standard, and Enterprise), two SoapBox Communicator options (Desktop or Mobile), and SoapBox Studio that includes seven open source software development kits for software developer productivity. The current version of SoapBox Studio supports developing custom XMPP-based collaboration applications that handle nearly any form of real-time multimodal communications with Microsoft Office integration. It allows developers to target multiple platforms including Windows, Linux, Pocket PC, Smartphone, and Flash. When combined with SoapBox Server, the SoapBox Platform 2007 enables unrivaled access and policy management capabilities with data encryption that make it uniquely suited to security-conscious public and private sector organizations.

The SoapBox Platform 2007 is available now from Coversant. Customers can choose from two licensing options for SoapBox Server 2007 after a free 30-day trial -- either per processor or by standard Client Access License contract. The Enterprise Edition is available for $18,850 per server in either 32 or 64-bit, or $30 per user for the first 500 seats. The Standard edition is available for $4,850 per server, or $15 per user for the first 500 seats. Redistribution licenses are available for both of these versions. The Express Edition of SoapBox Server is available free of charge, as is SoapBox Communicator and the complete SoapBox Studio 2007. Full information on the supported features of each Edition is available on Coversant's website.
