CPhA: Pharmacists Commend Health Initiatives in Budget

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Feb. 24, 2005) - The Canadian
Pharmacists Association (CPhA) commends the federal government on
reinforcing commitments made in September 2004's 10-Year Health
Agreement via new funding for health priorities.

According to CPhA's President, Garth McCutcheon: "The government's
investment of $170 million to improve drug safety and effectiveness is
especially welcomed by pharmacists. However, we firmly believe that an
emphasis on promoting rational drug use is also vital and is missing
from this budget". The key is ensuring the right drug, for the right
person at the right time. McCutcheon continued: "However, pharmacists
believe that improving post market surveillance will go a long ways
towards restoring the confidence of Canadians in the drugs they use."

Dr. Jeff Poston, CPhA's Executive Director, commented: "As the point of
first contact for many Canadians seeking health care, pharmacists are
also pleased to see an investment in public health issues." The funding
allocated to key public health priorities such as adequate health human
resources, chronic disease management and a healthy environment are
important building blocks for improved health outcomes for Canadians.
