Craft Labor Survey Shows 60% of U.S. Respondents Expect Journeymen Wage Increase This Quarter, an Industrial Info News Alert

SUGAR LAND, TX--(Marketwired - Oct 5, 2015) - Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) recently completed tabulating the results of its survey regarding the status of North American craft labor and obtained some interesting results from participants. More than 570 respondents participated, which included roughly 23% contractors and 77% owners. In addition to the overall results for the U.S. and Canada, responses were broken out into 13 North American market regions and also highlight the differences between owner and contractor responses.

Participants in the survey worked in all of the 12 Industrial Sectors tracked by Industrial Info. Most participants (44.6%) worked on both capital and maintenance projects, followed by 37.2% who exclusively worked on maintenance projects, and 14.6% who worked capital construction only.

The survey yielded many interesting results, including:

  • In the U.S., the highest concentration of travelers appears to be in the Southeast and Southwest market regions: 43% of respondents in the Southeast and 40% from the Southwest indicated that their workforce included more than 20% travelers.
  • About 60% of U.S. respondents indicated that they expected a wage increase for journeymen crafts of at least 2% next quarter. Fifteen percent of respondents in the Southwest and Midwest market regions expected overall journeymen wage increases of 6% or more.
  • Across all market regions, electricians, instrumentation techs and pipefitters were the leading crafts in short supply.
