Crain's Detroit Business Honors HelloWorld Attorney as General Counsel of the Year in the $10 Million to $100 Million Category

Ira Schlussel and HelloWorld, Inc. Legal Experts Guide Clients Through Complex Promotion Laws

PLEASANT RIDGE, MI--(Marketwired - Apr 28, 2014) - Crain's Detroit Business has named HelloWorld Senior Vice President and General Counsel, Ira Schlussel, as Michigan's General Counsel of the Year winner in the $10 Million to $100 Million category for the 2014 General and In-House Counsel Awards and Summit. Crain's will honor Schlussel at a May 13 summit and awards event at the Westin Book Cadillac in Detroit.

In its fourth year, Crain's salutes the best legal minds working inside Michigan public, private, nonprofit and government organizations. This recognition program is in partnership with the Association of Corporate Counsels and the State Bar of Michigan-Business Law Section In-House Counsel and in cooperation with the Oakland County Bar Association and Society of Corporate Secretaries & Governance Professionals.

After 15 years as ePrize, the company went through a significant rebranding effort in 2013 culminating in a name change to HelloWorld, Inc., in January 2014. Schlussel was instrumental in managing this rebranding effort, including all legal documentation and filings.

Additionally, during the last two years Schlussel has provided counsel for five corporate acquisitions:

  • May 2013 - Acquired to broaden our reach of consumer-activation tactics
  • March 2013 - Acquired Bulbstorm to extend customer engagement capabilities
  • January 2013 - Acquired Mozes, a mobile experience company focused on live events
  • August 2012 - Acquired by Catterton Partners, a consumer-focused private equity firm
  • January 2012 - Acquired Cellit, a mobile solutions company allowing brands engage consumers in market

"With the ubiquity of social media, mobile technology, and web solutions, the world of promotion law and consumer protection is changing at the speed of light, many of these issues have yet to be addressed through legislation requiring us to lead the industry," said Matt Wise, HelloWorld CEO. "Ira has led our 400+ member team through major changes affecting consumer engagement during the last year including the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) on mobile marketing compliance, the adoption of the most restrictive anti-spam law on the planet in Canada's Anti-Spam Law (CASL), and the new rule related to the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Our clients and team members trust him and we're thrilled to see Ira recognized for his accomplishments."

Joining the company in 2007, Schlussel leads the Legal Services team, ensuring legal compliance of all HelloWorld campaigns in areas including promotion and marketing law, CAN-SPAM, COPPA, direct mail, as well as viral, social and mobile best practices across 44 countries.
