CRC Launches SCARI Software Suite 2007 for Software Defined Radio

New development suite redefines modeling for SDR technology

OTTAWA, ONTARIO and ORLANDO, FLORIDA--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 14, 2006) - The Communications Research Centre Canada (CRC), an agency of Industry Canada, today announced at the Software Defined Radio (SDR) Technical Conference and Product Exhibition the latest release of its world-renowned SCARI Software Suite, an integrated development environment for SDR technology.

Already well-established within the military sector as the radio technology of the future, SDR is able to accommodate any communications protocol and frequency band simply by downloading the appropriate software. The SCARI Software Suite 2007, a Component-Based Development (CBD) environment for SDR, redefines the modeling strategy and enables manufacturers to leverage SDR technology for just about any industry, implementation or product.

"Our new Suite includes the SCA Core Framework and a completely redesigned CBD tool set, minimizing learning curves and greatly simplifying the complete SDR development life cycle," said Claude Belisle, Vice-President of Satellite Communications and Radio Propagation at CRC. "With the SCARI Software Suite 2007, SDR technology is now ready to fully embrace other domains of the embedded systems market, including the space, avionics, automobile, public safety and consumer electronics industries."

Built on the open-source Eclipse environment, the tool set of SCARI Software Suite 2007 offers embedded-system software developers a well-known, platform-independent interface for the design, modeling and monitoring of their SDR products. Among the new features introduced, the Suite offers much finer design granularity, real-time model validation and re-factoring capabilities.

"Developers will no longer have to redesign their components from a blank canvas, as components can now be assembled from a library of much smaller artifacts by simple drag-and-drop functionality," said Steve Bernier, SDR Project Leader at CRC. "The created model is validated in real-time against the architecture specification, design errors are immediately identified and repaired automatically."

Developers will gain enormous advantage in development time, risk reduction and cost savings as they prepare their next-generation SDR product. In fact, CRC's SCARI Software Suite 2007 has already been adopted by major radio manufacturers and key commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) platform providers, including Spectrum Signal Processing, ISR Technologies, Lyrtech and Pentek.

The SCA Core Framework, included in SCARI Software Suite 2007, is available for multiple operating systems (Linux, VxWorks, Integrity, YellowDog and soon LynxOS), ORBs (ORBexpress, TAO) and processors (x86, PowerPC, ARM).
