ATI and CN, two of Canada's largest companies, were among the 16 winning companies at the annual Canada investor relations awards held at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto last night. The IR Magazine Canada Awards 2006, held in association with the Globe and Mail, celebrate excellence in shareholder communications as voted for by investors. Ali Velshi, business anchor and host of CNN's On the Story, hosted the black-tie event.

ATI and CN captured the grand prix awards for best overall investor relations in the large-cap and mega-cap categories, respectively. Other Ciri grand prix winners are Cineplex Galaxy Income Fund for the mid-cap and Tundra Semiconductor Corp for the small-cap division. Manulife Financial's Dominic D'Alessandro was voted top in the best investor relations by a CEO category. ATI's Janet Craig won for best investor relations officer in the large-cap category while CN's Bob Noorigian won for the mega-cap division.

Launched in 1998, the Canada Awards are supported by what is considered Canada's largest research study of its type. This year 450 investors, analysts and portfolio managers voted for the best companies in categories related to investor relations. Cross Border, event producer, publisher of IR magazine and host of the IR Magazine Canada Awards, commissioned the study in association with the Globe and Mail. Detailed results, which include verbatim quotes, are compiled in a publication entitled Investor Perception Study, Canada 2006: Winning companies, winning strategies. Investors also discuss industry changes, their requirements and contemporary developments affecting the IR profession.

This year Mary Maude Research interviewed 250 buy-side and sell-side analysts and portfolio managers who nominated companies in 18 categories (see below for a detailed list of winners). Thomson Financial supplied the contact details for the respondents. In addition, PrecisionIR from WILink surveyed over 200 retail investors with average investment portfolios of $514,653, and three quarters of whom have over ten years' experience investing in stocks and bonds. Erdos & Morgan conducted research in the US market for the award for best Canadian IR in the US market.

'Our research shows the high level of importance investor relations plays in the daily lives of investors and analysts,' says Neil Stewart, Cross Border's editorial director. 'IR is the conduit both for information to the investment community and feedback to senior management. These awards are the Oscars of Bay Street, and they go to companies that do the best IR - role models for others to follow.'

The awards are sponsored by ADP Investor Communications, AVW-Telav Audio Visual Solutions, BarnesMcInerney, Bell, CNW Group, Canadian Investor Relations Institute, CCNMatthews, Christensen, Georgeson Shareholder (a Computershare company), InterCall Canada, Nasdaq, New York Stock Exchange, PrecisionIR, the Globe and Mail, Thomson, Toronto Stock Exchange and TSX Venture Exchange.
