CrossIron Mills and Bullfrog Power® Partner for Earth Hour Event

CrossIron Mills bullfrogpowers® equivalent of all households in Airdrie and Northern Calgary with clean, renewable electricity for Earth Hour

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - March 21, 2013) - CrossIron Mills shopping centre and Bullfrog Power, Canada's 100 per cent green energy provider, are teaming up for Earth Hour (Saturday, March 23, 2013) to bullfrogpower the equivalent of 206,548 households or every household in the City of Airdrie as well as Northern Calgary.(1)

As part of this year's Earth Hour celebrations, CrossIron Mills will also be engaging in a range of public education activities, promoting energy conservation and waste reduction. On March 23, from 10:00 am on, the first 1,000 shoppers at the mall will be able to exchange their plastic shopping bags for reusable ones. During the day, signs will be on display throughout the mall encouraging shoppers to "turn off the lights" for Earth Hour and, from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm, CrossIron Mills will be turning down 60 per cent of its common area lighting. Bullfrog Power will also be on hand to provide information about the green power partnership and to educate the public on renewable energy options. This initiative complements the mall's existing commitment to green energy with Bullfrog. Since April 2012, CrossIron Mills, an Ivanhoé Cambridge shopping centre, has chosen clean, renewable energy from Bullfrog Power for 20 per cent of its facilities. Ivanhoé Cambridge is one of the largest supporters in Canada of green energy from Bullfrog Power.

Started by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Earth Hour is the single, largest symbolic mass participation event in the world. The event inspires a global community of millions of people in more than 7,000 cities and towns across 152 countries and territories to switch lights off for an hour as a massive show of concern for the environment.

"Earth Hour is about collective impact and CrossIron Mills, as a place where thousands of people come together every day, has a unique opportunity to encourage participation," says James Moller, General Manager, CrossIron Mills. "Partnering with Bullfrog Power helps us to both educate the public about climate change and reduce the environmental impact of the surrounding area during Earth Hour."

Through the agreement, Bullfrog Power's generators inject renewable electricity onto the grid to match an amount equivalent to what all of the households in the City of Airdrie and Northern Calgary are estimated to use during Earth Hour. In Alberta, Bullfrog's electricity comes exclusively from wind facilities that have been certified as low impact by Environment Canada under its EcoLogo(M) program-instead of from polluting sources like coal and natural gas. Bullfrog Power uses the collective demand of its customers to support the development of new renewable generation in Canada.

"We are proud to be working with CrossIron Mills to help raise awareness of conservation and green energy through Earth Hour," says Anthony Santilli, Vice President, Sales, Bullfrog Power. "By encouraging participation in Earth Hour and making the choice for clean, renewable electricity with Bullfrog Power, CrossIron Mills is playing an important role in its community-mobilizing, educating and inspiring community members to fight climate change and air pollution."

In addition to its partnership with Bullfrog Power, CrossIron Mills implements several sustainability initiatives, including:

  • Irrigating more than 620,000 square feet of landscaped area with three storm management cisterns that harvest up to one million litres of rainwater at a time;
  • Using a white membrane roof, which reflects heat and reduces interior cooling requirements;
  • Achieving BOMA Best certification;
  • Diverting over 40 per cent of CrossIron Mills' waste from the landfill by way of recycling cans, cardboard, and plastics throughout the mall; and
  • Establishing an Organics Recycling Room with a goal of diverting an additional 20 per cent of waste from going to the landfill.
