CSX Intermodal Terminals Inc Invests in Additional Konecranes Reach Stackers

CSX Intermodal Terminals, Inc. (CSXIT) of Jacksonville FL Has Purchased Three Konecranes 7500 Series Reach Stackers for Their Charleston, South Carolina Terminal

SPRINGFIELD, OH--(Marketwired - October 14, 2014) - Konecranes (HEX: KCR1V) is a global industry-leading group of lifting businesses. The company has been manufacturing, selling and supporting heavy-duty lift trucks for more than 60 years. This purchase follows the acquisition of three identical units from Konecranes that have gone to CSXIT facilities in Buffalo, NY, Atlanta, GA and Charlotte, NC beginning in 2012. CSXIT and CSX Transportation provide terminal and rail service for the handling and transport of intermodal containers and trailers over 21,000 route miles of track in 23 states, the District of Columbia and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec.

According to CSXIT Director of Equipment Maintenance Bill Traub, this purchase dovetails with the company's quest for greater operational efficiency. Where CSXIT Charleston formerly used side loaders and fixed-mast machines, they are now using reach stackers almost exclusively.

"After looking at several different manufacturers we felt that Konecranes offered the best piece of equipment that met our needs," said Traub. "The Konecranes reach stackers have provided excellent reliability and availability. The CSXIT Charleston terminal performed approximately 175,000 lifts in 2013.

"We need a higher capacity machine in Charleston. Konecranes is not the only manufacturer that makes one, but we have had a good experience with the other Konecranes reach stackers we purchased in the past. That influenced our decision to go with Konecranes again on this project," Traub stated.

Operator feedback from their earlier purchase was also a factor. "The operators love these machines! Given a choice between two reach stackers, they would much rather operate the Konecranes. It boils down to smoothness, reliability, and ease of operation -- all things that they like," Traub said.

Konecranes 7500 reach stacker (model SMV 4543 TB5) delivers 45-ton capacity in the first rail and 34 tons in the second rail at 21-foot track centers.

According to Phil Stevens, North American Region Director for Konecranes heavy lift trucks, the CSXIT purchase exemplifies a very positive direction for Konecranes products in the rail and intermodal market sector. "This is the most recent of several large reach stacker orders for us in the North American market," said Stevens. "CSXIT's continued commitment to our product line certainly contributes to our ongoing success."

Linder Industrial Machinery of Plant City FL is the supporting dealer for Konecranes reach stackers, providing product and warranty support in the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida. According to President John Coughlin, Linder has invested in an extensive parts inventory ready to support Konecranes equipment and limit downtime for customers. They also have two specialist technicians on staff trained on the Konecranes products.

"We are a solutions-oriented company working closely with our customers to provide a lower owning and operating cost to improve their bottom line," said Coughlin. "We achieve this by representing and supporting high-quality products like these reach stackers from Konecranes."
