Cubic's ASTOR Data Link System Performs Well During Capability Assurance Missions Testing

SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwire - October 9, 2008) - Cubic Corporation (NYSE: CUB) announced that its narrowband data link for the United Kingdom's Airborne Stand-Off Radar (ASTOR) surveillance system performed well during key trials conducted earlier this year.

The U.K. Ministry of Defence, Royal Air Force (RAF) and Raytheon Company, the prime contractor for ASTOR, successfully completed Capability Assurance Missions (CAM) testing for the ASTOR platform. The tests replicated actual mission scenarios for British ground and air forces, and included an evaluation of the narrowband data link. During the tests, the narrowband data link transmitted and received intelligence imagery in near real time from Raytheon's dual mode (synthetic aperture and moving-target indicator) radar under a variety of conditions.

Cubic's ASTOR narrowband data link allows swift transfer of surveillance information and imagery from air data terminals aboard the ASTOR Sentinel R1 aircraft, a retrofitted Bombardier Global Express jet, to ground data terminals at high-altitude and long-range to give battle commanders situational awareness during missions. The ASTOR data link is derived from Surveillance and Control Data Link that Cubic developed for the U.S. Joint Surveillance Target Acquisition Radar System (Joint STARS) now being used by the U.S. military in Iraq and Afghanistan. Since the two systems are interoperable, British forces will be able to exchange information with U.S. Joint STARS ground stations as well as their own U.K. ASTOR ground stations.

Cubic recently trained Raytheon personnel on how to use and repair the ASTOR ground systems as part of Cubic's 10-year support contract with Raytheon. To date, the ASTOR data link has been integrated aboard four Sentinel R1 aircraft, with one other expected to come online later this year. Cubic delivered all the components for the ASTOR data link and has provided integration, sustainment and other support.
