Culbreth Middle School, Chapel Hill, NC, Voted One of Top 5 Semi-Finalists in Recipes for Healthy Kids Competition

CHAPEL HILL, NC--(Marketwire - March 22, 2011) -  Grey Culbreth Middle School in Chapel Hill, North Carolina has won a coveted spot in the semi-finals of Recipes for Healthy Kids Competition. Culbreth, which is serviced by Chartwells School Dining Services, is one of the top 5 semi-finalist recipes in the Whole Grains category. Their stir-fried green rice, eggs and ham recipe has been posted on the Recipes for Healthy Kids Challenge website for public voting. Voting will take place between now and May 15, 2011 to determine a Popular Choice Award winner. You can vote for Culbreth's recipe at: http://www.recipesforkidschallenge.com/submissions/745-stir-fried-green-rice-eggs-and-ham.

The recipe was developed by Chef Andrea Reusing, who operates the Lantern Restaurant in Chapel Hill. Named one of "15 Green Chefs" on Grist's international list and a 2010 James Beard Nominee, Chef Reusing serves on the boards of the Center of Environmental Farming Systems and Chefs Collaborative. Lantern is one of Gourmet Magazine's top fifty restaurants in the United States and Chef Reusing's first cookbook, "Cooking in the Moment: A Year of Seasonal Recipes," will be published in April, 2011.

As part of the competition, judges will visit Culbreth to meet the Recipe Competition team and taste the recipe prepared as part of that day's lunch. The recipe will be judged on four criteria: taste/flavor; student appeal; creativity/originality; and appearance/presentation. The top finalist in each category (3 finalists total) will travel to compete in a National Cook-Off to determine the Grand Prize winner.

"Chartwells applauds Chef Reusing and Culbreth's creativity and dedication to teamwork that resulted in this tasty and healthful recipe," said Elizabeth Cartano, Director of Dining for Chartwells Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools. "The Recipes for Healthy Kids competition allows Chartwells to foster the creation of kid-friendly, tasty recipes that incorporate a host of whole grains, dark green and orange vegetables, dry beans and peas and allows us to play an essential role in reaching the First Lady's goal of ending childhood obesity within a generation."
