Cultural Interpretation Services for Our Communities Celebrates 20 Years of Service to Ottawa's Rich Cultural Fabric

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - June 5, 2013) - Today, His Worship Mayor Jim Watson joins CISOC Executive Director Benjamin Chacon and over 100 cultural interpreters and translators in celebrating the contribution CISOC has made to Ottawa's rich cultural fabric over the past 20 years.

CISOC is a true Ottawa success story. As a charitable organization, it took root as a community response to a local need for cultural and language support to an increasing number of newcomers. Since its creation in 1993, CISOC has grown to be recognized and sought out by organizations from across Canada and beyond for its best practices, for training, and of course its interpretation and translation expertise.

"Over the past 20 years, CISOC has helped thousands of people bridge language and cultural barriers in Ottawa to make their lives easier" said Benjamin Chacon, CISOC Executive Director. "Many of the people CISOC has helped over the years have in turn become CISOC interpreters or translators in order to help others; they understand the challenges that new Canadians can face."

CISOC prides itself on being an integral part of the Ottawa community's tremendous cultural fabric. CISOC was founded as a charitable organization and has facilitated access to essential services for over 60 cultural communities in our region. On any given day or night, CISOC interpreters can be found in hospital emergency rooms in the region helping patients and their families overcome language and cultural barriers, working with the Ottawa Police Service, or assisting the Children's Aid Society and a variety of other community organizations.

As a social enterprise, CISOC has a committed Board of Directors and dedicated staff who represent Ottawa's cultural diversity. At the same time, CISOC has also provided valuable training and employment experience for local and professional interpreters and translators, particularly those who are new to our community.
